Chronic fatigue. This is a term that has been circulating around doctor’s offices, health articles, websites, and regular conversation for quite some time. Essentially, chronic fatigue is a feeling of being tired or exhausted for an extended period of weeks, months, or even years. It’s a feeling that far too many people deal with and has become more widespread throughout the years. As stresses increase, schedules fill up, and health steadily declines due to poor eating and lack of exercise, it is easy to see why so many people spend each day tired and not up for the challenge of daily tasks. Chronic fatigue, though a very real problem, is far too vague a definition. This definition tells you that you’re tired, which is no surprise to anyone experiencing this! The more important thing to know is why you are tired all of the time. Chronic fatigue would better be termed as adrenal fatigue. Everybody has two adrenal glands, located just on top of each kidney. The purpose of these glands is to secrete specific chemicals for the body, one of which is epinephrine. Epinephrine is the chemical responsible for the “fight or flight” response. Basically, it pumps you up in times of great stress and makes you more readily to react to whatever is currently stressing you. While this is a natural and effective process for your body, it is much better suited for short periods of stress. Unfortunately, chronic stress can get the better of these glands and eventually exhaust them, making it very difficult for them to secrete more epinephrine for the body to use. When this happens, the body suffers from adrenal fatigue and the typical day becomes something far more difficult to deal with.
Is it possible to reverse and eventually fix this condition? Of course it is! The first step is to identify the very stresses taxing your body and try your best to reduce and/or remove them.
